Sitting outside the bay door, Gus drummed his thumbs on the steering wheel as Scarlett’s words continued to repeat themselves in his head.
Falling for him…
Closing his eyes, he leaned back in the seat and willed his body to be still. He’d been at such a loss since leaving Scarlett’s that he didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know how to feel. But every time he forced himself to imagine a life and a world without Travis in it, he felt his whole body push back. He felt his inner self rip the thought to shreds—any thought that stood between him and the image of the man Gus was considering banishing.
But what did that mean? If he wasn’t going to push Travis out of his life, what did that leave?
With his eyes still closed, he thought back, remembering when he had wanted to get to know Scarlett. He’d been crazy about her.
“What did I do?” He reached for the memories that felt like another life now. His eyes snapped open. “I asked her out on a date.”
Gus felt his blood drain from his face. He shivered, and his heart pounded erratically in his chest. Leaning forward in his car seat as if he could see around the corner of the open bay door, he thought about all the guys he worked with.
“Dating a guy…” How would they see him? What would they think of him? They’d all met Scarlett, and they all loved her. They felt like a family, all of them together. But Mom and Dad were splitting up, and Dad was thinking about dating a dude. “Fuck…”
Gus blew out a breath. “Okay, time to tell Travis to hit the road,” he mumbled as his hand reached for his car door.
Scarlett was warning him. His heart was going to get involved. Travis’s seemed to be, too. Put up or shut up. It was a mantra.
Once inside the bay, Gus walked the length of the parked service van toward the back-corner office. There was the quiet sound of laughter accompanied by the sound of Travis’s voice as he spoke with someone on the phone.
Rounding the corner of the van, the office space came into view. Even though the transformation had happened slowly over the last week and a half, the difference still startled him. The desk now sat on an area rug that acted as a wall-free boundary of the office’s perimeter. Against the wall next to the customer chair—a beaten up folding chair—was a tall leafy green plant, and a linen sheet had been draped over the customer chair, its back gathered in with a decorative, tied rope.
A few feet away, Tommy and Micky stood drinking coffee out of mugs rather than throw-away cups. Travis had made the coffee—and it smelled good. Both men wore genuine smiles on their faces. They were happy and content. They liked it here. They were happy with their jobs. And that made their talent and skills more likely to stay put with Plumb Exception instead of moving on to bigger operations that could offer better benefits.
